Tooth Extractions in Sexsmith

At South 40 Dental Sexsmith, Alberta we may recommend a tooth extraction if you have an infected tooth that is severely affecting the state of your oral health.

Tooth Extractions

Sometimes there is just no saving a tooth. It may be broken below the gum line, badly decayed, or you may have stubborn wisdom teeth that are coming in sideways (impacted) pushing against your back molars, and making it difficult to keep clean, leading to infection and pain.

Wisdom teeth are the most common type of extraction due to the amount of discomfort they create when they become symptomatic.

To help ease dental anxiety, we can provide sedation for your oral surgery appointment, such as oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you relax during the procedure, and many patients choose this option to complete large amounts of treatment in one visit.

After Your Extraction Appointment

You can expect for the extraction site to bleed for a little while after the surgery. Gauze will be applied at the end of the surgery, and you will need to change it when it becomes soaked. If bleeding continues for longer than 24 hours, you should call your dentist.

Rest when you return home, but do not lie flat. This could prolong the bleeding. Prop your head up on a pillow when lying down. Your dentist may prescribe you pain medication, so if you become sore, take as directed.

Discomfort and some slight swelling is a normal side effect and can last up to a week or more, depending on how complicated the extraction(s) were. A detailed post-surgery instruction sheet will be provided to help you through the healing process.
